911 calls released of teen jumping from school bus on freeway

HOUSTON – For the first time, we're hearing the 911 calls made earlier this month when a 13-year-old girl jumped from a moving school bus onto I-45 in Galveston County.

There were 11 calls to 911 dispatchers from people who were driving down the Gulf Freeway to Galveston that day. This is the first time we're hearing some of those.

It was almost as if they couldn't believe what they had just seen.

911 calls poured in the afternoon of Dec. 7, after 13-year-old Mykala Hurst jumped from the back of a Galveston Independent School District bus.

"I'm very near the causeway on Galveston 45. A child just jumped out of the back of the school bus. I've moved on. Other people are stopping, and the bus is stopped," one called said.

Witnesses said Hurst seemed to be arguing with a student before she jumped onto the freeway. She was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Frantic motorists reported seeing someone lying on the highway.

Caller: "This is GISD transportation, we need an ambulance for a student."
Caller: "Southbound 45 on the highway, before the causeway."
Dispatch: "Yes, ma'am."
Caller: "A student has jumped off the back of the bus on the highway."
Dispatch: "Yes ma'am, deputy's en route."

In most of those calls people just reported seeing someone on the road without realizing the girl had jumped out of the bus.
