SUGAR LAND, Texas – Police from Illinois traveled to Sugar Land on Thursday where they arrested a man accused of murdering his wife more than 40 years ago.
Donnie Rudd, 73, is now charged with murder and is headed back to the Chicago area where he will face a judge on Monday.
Investigators in Illinois have been following this cold case since 1973 and finally had enough evidence to make an arrest.
Rudd has been living in a Sugar Land apartment complex off Lexington Boulevard for the past several years.
On his website Rudd describes himself as a "lifelong Texan," who has degrees in chemical engineering, law, bio science and bio engineering. He refers to himself as a doctor.
"Definitely wouldn't have expected something like this," said a neighbor who lives in an apartment above Rudd.
He told KPRC 2 that Rudd worked from home and lived with his girlfriend.
"They were kind of elderly and weren't out a whole lot," he said.
More details about the 1973 murder are expected to be released in court on Monday.
