Good samaritans catch grocery store thief

BELLAIRE, Texas – When Mike Hassell pulled into the parking lot of the Randalls store on Bellaire Boulevard near South Rice he knew something was going on, he saw a worker trying to stop a man in the parking lot.

"I asked him what happened," Hassell said. "He goes, 'He just robbed us!' They're not allowed to chase the guy but I don't work for Randalls so I chased him."

Hassell was joined by another customer, Victor Ortuno.

Hassell took off in his car and Ortuno started running.

"I chased him by foot," he said. "He was a little bit fast but not enough."

The men finally caught the man a few blocks away in a nearby neighborhood. They held him there until police arrived.

"He wanted to fight me but I told him to get down on the ground," Hassell said.

"I told him 'Don't move.' And he kept repeating, 'I'm hungry, I'm hungry."

Witnesses said the man was trying to steal meat from the store. He wasn't armed.

Bellaire police arrested him, Wednesday night he was still in jail and the case is under investigation.

"Anything I can do to help the neighborhood," Hassell said. "I'd do it again if I had to."

"People like that we don't need in the neighborhood, I don't need people like that," said Ortuno.
