29 students taken to hospital after school bus accident during field trip

HOUSTON – A field trip for children visiting a farm in northeast Harris County was cut short Thursday morning after their school bus was rear-ended by a car.

The accident happened outside of Old McDonald's Farm on East FM 1960 and Moonshine Hill Loop around 10:30 a.m.

The view from Sky 2 showed a small, blue sedan had crashed into the back of the bus.

The bus showed a small amount of damage on the rear bumper, and the sedan was heavily damaged.

Five adults and 29 children were on board the bus at the time.  They were all  loaded onto an Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department emergency bus and taken to the hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

All 34 were released from the hospital on Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the sedan was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital.  The condition of the driver is unknown.

Old McDonald's Farm has a petting zoo and a pumpkin patch, and is a popular field trip spot during the fall season.

"Terrible accidents that we have here and we need to do something about it," said Barnes. "Speed is one thing. At night, there are no lights along this stretch either... "It's absolutely treacherous."

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, in the last 6 months, there have been 9 accidents, one of the deadly, on a 3-mile stretch of FM 1960, from 59N to about Woodland Hills Drive.

On Tuesday, a 5-year-old boy died from injuries he sustained in a crash that happened less than a mile away from Thursday's school bus accident.

A motorcycle slammed into an SUV carrying the 5-year-old.

The impact sent the motorcyclist flying into the vehicle and into the child.
