As Seen on TV: Wonki Wands

HOUSTON – Parents get roped into buying a lot of products our kids see on TV. The commercials are strategically placed in cartoons and popular kid's shows. Consumer expert Amy Davis is putting Wonki Wands to the test for "As Seen on TV Tuesday."

The Wonki Wands ad we found on YouTube  claims you can make the biggest, wackiest bubbles in the world.

"Wonki Wands are the super fun new toy that makes bubbles up to 4 feet wide and 40 feet long!" says the excited voice in the ad.

The wands are advertised for kids from 5 to 55, so Channel 2 News producer Shannon Sommers and her 7-year-old daughter, Lexi, decided to give them a whirl one weekend. They dipped the wands into the bubble solution, and then tried to swing the wands just like in the commercial.

"Try running... go!" Shannon told Lexi.  A small bubble came off of the wands, but nothing like in the commercial.

Try after try, the results were "wonki," but not in a fun, magical sort of way.

"Hmmm- no. This is horrible," Shannon said on the third attempt to make a huge bubble with the wands.  "I mean, you get wet."

Neither Shannon, nor her daughter, could make giant bubbles.

"No, no. no!" said Lexi, giving the product a literal thumbs down.

"It just doesn't work," said Shannon.  "I'm not sure how they created the bubbles on TV, but you don't get it here."

So we hate to burst your bubble, but Wonki Wands did not pass our test. You can save the $10 for something else.
