KATY, Texas – People working out at the the gym, focused on getting or staying in shape and someone is taking advantage of their dedication. That's exactly what's been happening across the Katy area over the past few weeks, with a thief targeting several local gyms.
Investigators with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said a man captured on surveillance video has struck several gyms. They include a few LA Fitness centers and some 24 Hour Fitness locations, including one in Richmond on the Grand Parkway near FM 1093.
From surveillance video taken at that gym, investigators said the assailant appears to be a white or Hispanic man between 40 and 50 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds. He is seen wearing a blue polo sports shirt and a light brown baseball cap
"I think it just shows that we gotta stay vigilant, you know?" said Jamahl Gundy, a member of the 24 Hour Fitness in Richmond. "You're not really safe anywhere."
"I think it's pretty lame," said fellow member Sarah Barnett. "I don't like anybody that steals from other people. Get a job."
Investigators said the thief has not only broken into lockers and stolen wallets and car keys, he's stolen several cars and run up at least $3,000 in stolen credit card charges while shopping in the Galleria and at stores in Katy.
Gyms are encouraging members to take extra security measures, which some have already followed.
"It should be a safe place," Barnett said. "But at the same time, you have to take your own precautions as well. I don't leave stuff in my car. I always keep everything with me."
"We are aware that theft has been reported at our 24 Hour Fitness Katy Bella Terra club in Richmond," 24 Hour Fitness said in a statement to KPRC 2 News. "The safety and security of our members are of the utmost importance for 24 Hour Fitness, and we want everyone to have a positive experience each time they visit our clubs."
"We work closely with the police department in support of their investigation into thefts reported to them and remind our members to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of theft:
- Never leave personal belongings unattended
- Leave valuables at home or work
- Lock your car and do not leave items visible inside
- Use an arm band or fanny pack to hold your ID cards, keys and money while you work out
- Report suspicious activity to 24 Hour Fitness team members or the police immediately
"We are not able to discuss details of the police department's active investigations, and refer those questions to the local law enforcement agency," the statement reads."
