New details in murder-suicide involving ex-MLB player Darryl Hamilton

PEARLAND, Texas – Channel 2 Investigates has learned more about the criminal history of Darryl Hamilton's girlfriend, the woman who police say killed him and then herself.

Pearland police said Monica Jordan shot and killed Hamilton, a former Major League Baseball player, on Sunday at her Pearland home at 11506 Island Breeze Street, then turned the gun on herself. Their 13-month-old son, Jaxon, was home at the time.

Police Tuesday released a 911 call made by Jordan's ex-husband, Rohaven Richards. In the call, Richards said his wife called him to tell him to call police. He made the call while he was on the way to her house.

"I just got a call from my ex-wife. She was distraught, she asked me to come, come over there and to call the police. She said it's an emergency," Richards said in the recording.

Children of Richards and Jordan from their marriage were with Richards on Sunday for Father's Day, police said.

Channel 2 Investigates has learned Jordan was convicted of arson in January 2008 for burning down Richards' house. He stated that Jordan chased him through the house with a container of gasoline trying to throw gasoline on him and burn him, but he managed to escape unharmed.

Witnesses said Jordan was later seen pouring gasoline on the car in the garage and setting the house and garage on fire.

Jordan got deferred adjudication after Richards wrote a letter to the court asking she not be sentenced to prison. She served 30 days in jail and paid a fine of nearly $80,000 in restitution for the crime.

Pearland police said the only previous call history at Jordan's Pearland residence was a theft of an iPad in 2012. Hamilton was not mentioned in that report.

Investigators said Hamilton and Jordan had reached a custody agreement on Jaxon last Friday, just two days before the shootings.

Hamilton and Jordan had argued about the paternity case involving their 14-month-old son, but there had never been any violence between them, according to Gary Zimmerman, a close friend and attorney for Hamilton.

"He never said he was afraid physically or feared Monica Jordan," Zimmerman said. "To my knowledge there were no violent episodes. I never would have predicted this in my wildest imagination.

Jaxon, who is left without parents, is currently with his older siblings, and is being cared for by Jordan's ex-husband.

John Hamilton, Darryl Hamilton's brother and a well-known sports agent, arrived in Houston Tuesday to help make his brother's funeral arrangements.

Darryl Hamilton was a Louisiana native who played parts of 13 seasons for the Rangers, Brewers, Mets, Giants and Rockies. He also was an analyst for MLB Network and made appearances at the Astros Urban Youth Academy.
