Former MLB player Darryl Hamilton killed by girlfriend in murder-suicide, police say

PEARLAND, Texas – The Major League Baseball community is mourning the loss of former player Darryl Hamilton, who was found shot and killed Sunday in what Pearland police are calling a murder-suicide.

Hamilton, 50, was also a commentator for the MLB Network.

Police said he was shot and killed by his girlfriend Monica Jordan, 44.  Jordan was a corporate contract lawyer for a major oil and gas firm.

Police said they got a 911 call late Sunday to a house owned by Jordan.

They found the bodies of Hamilton and Jordan, and their 13-month-old son, Jaxon, who was unhurt.  Investigators say Hamilton and Jordan had reached a custody agreement on Jaxon just two days before the shootings.

The street where it happened was quiet Monday and most neighbors declined to speak. But in west Houston where Hamilton lived, people were just learning the news.

"I see he was a good father," housekeeper Maria Rigdon said. "He always (took) care of his kids. I see him playing with his kids outside a lot. Usually they come out and play in the afternoon."

Rigdon worked at a home across the street in the neighborhood north of Interstate 10 near Bingle Road.

Hamilton was a Louisiana native who played parts of 13 seasons for the Rangers, Brewers, Mets, Giants and Rockies.

Police haven't told KPRC 2 who called 911 -- whether it was a neighbor, Hamilton or Jordan.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Jaxon is now with his older siblings, and is being cared for by Jordan's ex-husband.

John Hamilton, Darryl Hamilton's brother, arrived in Houston Tuesday to help make his brother's funeral arrangements.  John Hamilton is a well-known sports agent.

The Houston Astros released a statement Monday that read, "The Astros are saddened by the tragic loss of Darryl Hamilton. In addition to his fine, 13-year career as a Major League player and talented MLB Network analyst, Darryl was also a friend of the Astros organization, strongly supporting our youth baseball outreach efforts. Darryl made appearances at the Astros Urban Youth Academy and was a friend to our staff there. The Astros extend our deepest sympathies to Darryl's family and many friends throughout the game of baseball and beyond."
