HOUSTON – There was bumper-to-bumper traffic on the 610 West Loop on Saturday after an SUV hit a Houston police officer on a motorcycle Saturday.
"It appears he served or lost control of his vehicle a little bit," Sgt. Daniel Kerr, with the Bellaire Police Department, said. "(The) back end may have swerved and he came over into the lane where the officer was."
The officer, a nine-year veteran with the Houston Police Department, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by ambulance.
"The officer was knocked off his motorcycle," Kerr said. "The motorcycle continued sliding down the road for some distance."
The officer was escorting traffic for the funeral of Kyssi Andrews, the 7-year-old cancer patient who made headlines last fall after becoming an honorary Texas state trooper.
Bellaire police said the white SUV that swiped the officer was a part of the funeral procession. Officials said they believe wet weather contributed to the crash.
KPRC 2 is told the officer suffered minor injuries and should be OK. The driver of the SUV was not hurt.
