Texas House considers bill to end daylight saving time

AUSTIN, Texas – Every spring we move our clocks ahead one hour and lose an hour of sleep. But if some Texas lawmakers get their way, last Sunday's daylight saving time change may be the last for the Lone Star state.

A bill banning the time change went before a House Committee Wednesday.

"This is a bill we filed, House bill 150," said Rep. Dan Flynn, of House District 2. "(It will) end the constant changing and hassle of daylight saving time."

He said there are safety benefits of ending daylight saving time. Some children have to head to school when it's dark outside. Other studies show the loss of sleep can lead to suicides and headaches in the weeks after we spring forward.

But not everyone wants to do away with the time change. North Houston resident Melissa traveled to Austin to speak before the committee.

"Sports and outdoor enthusiasts love this time of year," said Melissa. "Tourists favor daylight saving time and retailers favor daylight saving time."

Currently, Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that don't participate in the time change.
