PD: Gunman dead after killing one, confronting police in Rosenberg

ROSENBERG, Texas – Authorities are investigating two separate shootings that left two people dead, including the alleged gunman, in Rosenberg early Wednesday.

Officers responded to a shooting call at Brittany Square Apartments in the 4700 block of Reading Road around 1:50 a.m. and found two gunshot victims.

Elizabeth Martin, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jeffrey Obersteller, 29, was shot four times in the chest and once in the arm, and was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

"I heard the screaming, I heard the gun shots, and I saw the car that drove off," said LaToya Hayward, who is the victim's next door neighbor.

"It was like six or seven gunshots back to back. I grabbed my son because the gunfire was so close, and then when I realized what was happening, I just kept thinking about my neighbor's kids. I was just so worried about them," said Hayward.

According to witnesses, they saw the shooter leave in a four-door white Chevrolet, which was the same make and model of the victim's ex-boyfriend.

"He has been gone for about a week," said Hayward, when asked about the victim's boyfriend. "The other man that was in her apartment was her friend. He was there for her protection in case he (ex-boyfriend) ever came back again. No one expected him to come through the upstairs patio."

Detectives found shattered glass on the victim's patio from the broken window. Officers also found two vehicles parked in the front parking lot of the apartment complex with flattened tires.

Moments after the shots were fired, two officers who were patrolling in the area arrived at the apartment complex as the suspect was leaving.

"Patrol officers spotted a four-door white car leaving the scene," said Lt. William Henry with the Rosenberg Police Department. "The car eventually stopped in front of Traylor Stadium. There was a confrontation. Our officers opened fire and the suspect was shot and killed on the scene."

As is standard procedure, the Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate.

Two police officers were put on administrative leave. Both officers have been with Rosenberg police for two years.

Friends of the female victim said they have no idea why anyone would want to kill her.

"She lived for her kids. She was a great person, she didn't deserve this," said Vicki Kagey.

Names of the victims and suspect have not been released pending notification of family members.
