LEAGUE CITY, Texas – A police chase that started in League City ended in southeast Houston Tuesday afternoon.
League City police said the chase started when officers observed a suspicious vehicle in Kemah in the 1700 block of West FM 646. Police say the driver was wanted for a robbery warrant out of Galveston County. Officers tried to stop the driver, who then fled and refused to stop. The pursuit eventually ended on the Beltway 8 service road westbound near Cullen after spike strips were deployed to stop the vehicle.
According to police, the man inside the car called law enforcement saying he had a weapon and that he might hurt himself. League City police said a shot was fired from inside the car.
Deputies and police slowly approached the car. They used what appeared to be a diversionary device that looked like a smoke bomb to see if it could smoke out the driver.
Police say the man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He has been identified as 28-year-old Danny Simmons, of Dickinson.
Houston police homicide investigators will handle the investigation.
