TurboTax settles for $6.5 million in class action lawsuit

Suit claimed the company charged customers knowing they qualified for free e-filing

HOUSTON – Intuit, the makers of TurboTax, have agreed to pay out $6.5 million to settle a class action lawsuit.

That suit claims the tax software company charged customers up to $29.95 to file their taxes knowing millions of people qualified for "free" electronic filing.

TurboTax maintains there was nothing wrong with the practice. The court has not decided which side is right.

If you used TurboTax's online refund processing service from January 12, 2008, through May 28, 2013, you may be eligible for part of the settlement.
