HOUSTON – Three people were arrested in connection with the kidnapping and burning of a woman in east Harris County.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Anita Pena, 37, Thomas Martin, 27, and Garrick Hastings, 25, were arrested on Wednesday. Hastings and Martin were charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and Pena was charged with aggravated assault.
Investigators said the three kidnapped a woman last month from a motel and took her to a vacant trailer in east Harris County, where she was bound, beaten and set on fire.
"She was set on fire with an accelerant. We don't know what type of an accelerant. She received burns on 80 percent of her body. She somehow survived," said Christina Garza with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the 29-year-old victim, whose name was withheld for her safety, managed to get out of the burning trailer and crawled next door, where she collapsed on a neighbor's porch.
She is being treated at an area hospital in a medically induced coma.
According to court documents, the suspects wanted revenge on the victim because she owed Hastings money. At one time, she lived with Hastings, records showed.
