Occupy Houston protesters arrested after sitting in streets

HOUSTON – Several Occupy Houston protesters were arrested in downtown Houston Thursday.

The group met at Market Square Park in the 300 block of Milam Street at 4 p.m. and marched to the intersection of Commerce and Travis streets.

About a dozen protesters sat in the street, blocking traffic.

Houston police handcuffed 12 protesters and forcibly removed many of them from the street. They were charged with class-B misdemeanor obstructing an intersection.

A 13th person, a woman who decided to join the movement, was also arrested. She was charged with interfering with police duties.

Occupy Houston protesters have camped out in Tranquility Park for several weeks. Seven people were arrested last week when they put a tarp over electrical equipment during a storm. City officials said that was considered a tent, and tents are not allowed in the park.
