The first church the men targeted was Gloria Dei Lutheran church Nassau Bay in June, investigators said.

A credit card stolen in that incident was used at a League City Walgreens hours later, detectives said.

Father Dean Lawrence said one of the men walked through the front door of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church claiming to be be looking for child care. Another man went through a side door asking about work.

Lawrence said that while one of the men distracted a church employee, the other man took her wallet out of her purse.

"We probably should be more diligent about making sure things are under lock and key," Lawrence said.

The men also hit the League City Church of Christ, police said.

Detective Matt Weems said they did not connect the thefts until they found surveillance video from a Walgreens store showing the same men using stolen credit cards at least twice.

"We're not sure if they're from this are or from the Houston area, but it seems there's a common trend with where they're going with the card," Weems said.

Weems said the men bought cartons of cigarettes, about $100 worth of stamps and some body spray.

A newer-model white Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Denali was also seen in each video, Weems said.

Lawrence said he hopes the men realize that what they're doing is wrong.

"We're in the business of redemption and hope, so I hope that they can find a new life and live a new life," he said.
