Detectives said the driver of the Malibu, Alyssa Groth, lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic. The Kia SUV then hit the Groth's vehicle, investigators said.
Groth died at the scene, investigators said.
The driver's three children, ages 5 to 8, were in the back seat of the Malibu, deputies said. One was taken by helicopter and two were taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. A 5-year-old girl died early Wednesday.
"With the (police) tape and everything, I knew something tragic had happened," said witness Bridgett Tillman. "I prayed over the body as I walked up."
The driver of the Kia was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Investigators are looking into why the mother lost control of her car. Officials said everybody was wearing seat belts.
