Mother identifies 2 kids shot in car at red light in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – Two kids were shot Tuesday as they sat inside a car at a traffic light in southeast Houston, police said.

Police said that a 15-year-old boy was in the driver’s seat, a 12-year-old girl was in the back seat and an adult man was in the passenger’s seat of a car that was stopped at a light in the 7400 block of Scott Street.

Around 12:30 a.m., a gray Chrysler 200 pulled up on the driver’s side of the car and someone inside opened fire, police said.

The children's mother said her son, Steven Hunter, was shot three times and her daughter, D'Asia Hunter, was shot once in the thigh.

“My daughter jumped out of the car; she was limping. You could see blood all over her pants. But she wasn’t worried about herself. She was worried about her brother that was lifeless now,” said mother Aurelia Hunter.

But he was alive.

The boy drove three blocks to his home, and family members took the kids to Fire Station 46 for help.

“I did not think my son would like to make it to the hospital,” said Aurelia Hunter.

“Firefighters had just gotten back from a call, actually, when they noticed that there were two people out here who needed help, laying on the slab,” said Sheldra Brigham, with Houston Fire Department.

Both underwent surgery and are expected to be OK, their mother said. Steven might face another surgery, she said.

“They were lucky that they were as close as they were to make it this fire station where they can get help,” she said.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

The children's mother said she doesn't know why anyone would target her children and that Steven had just started a summer job.

“I’m thinking my son is going to do a summer job with other little boys his age, and it was actually a drug ring,” said Aurelia Hunter.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
