The average "seat pitch" or distance between one point on a seat to the seat in front of it is around 30 to 32 inches on most airlines.
Southwest Airlines say they know passengers are not thrilled but they're trying to cut costs.
"Passengers are not willing to pay the true cost of airfare and airlines have no other option but to squeeze more passengers into their aircraft, into economy class. That's what they are using these slim seats for. They are able to add an additional row of seats in economy," said Mary Kirby, Editor of Airline Passenger Experience.
According to TripAdvisor, airlines in the U.S. have seats with 31 to 32 inch-pitch. First class has a pitch of 39 inches.
