HOUSTON – An outpouring of love from the community is prompting a change to King’s Day honoring Michael “5000” Watts.
Watts, 52, died in late January from a fatal heart rhythm called torsades de pointes, a sudden cardiac condition. He leaves behind his wife, Tammy Watts, five children, and two grandchildren.

His career began at age 14 and grew into a legacy as a DJ, radio personality, business owner, and founder of Swishahouse. He also helped shape Houston’s hip-hop scene and launch the careers of several artists.
In a statement, the family said “due to an overwhelming amount of love and support,” the King’s Day celebration has been moved to Monday, Feb. 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., which falls on Presidents Day.
“Schools are closed, as well as most people are off work. This gives everyone an opportunity to be apart,” the family said.
The original King’s Day was scheduled for Feb. 12, but the family wanted to ensure the event could include the entire community — from friends and family to fans.
“It’s important to us to recognize this as a celebration which will truly pay homage to the life and legacy of Michael 5000 Watts,” the family added.
The celebration will be held at The Bell Tower on 34th (901 W 34th St, Houston, TX 77018).
Attendees are encouraged to wear black, gold, or white; casual attire is fine, and Swishahouse paraphernalia is welcome.
