HOUSTON – From the competition, to the concerts, to the cuisine the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is Houston's annual marquee event. Most of us love the atmosphere, but what about those who have never been to a rodeo?
KPRC anchor Sara Donchey is making her mark on the Houston market, but the California native has never been to a rodeo. Her 4 p.m. partner and rodeo veteran Keith Garvin took it upon himself to get her properly fitted with the right duds. In other words, Sara had to get rid of her 5 1/2-inch high heels to get geared up with her first pair of boots.
Keith took her to the experts at Cavendar's Boot City, which has been outfitting cowboys and cowgirls since 1965. Bring in assistant manager Barbara Coe who says it all starts with the boots.
"That is what we are here to do," says Barbara. "To put you in a pair of boots that you can walk however many hours. The whole weekend."
Sara found a pair of Caiman boots and once she settled on that pair they of course had to add a shirt, jeans, and the right belt.
"A belt with the bling, with the Caiman, to match her boots," says Coe.
And the search had to continue for the right hat.
At the end of the day the goal was to shake loose some of that West Coast surf and sand and trade it in, at least for a little while, for blue jeans, bling, and leather.
"Did you ever in a million years imagine yourself in cowgirl boots and jeans," asks Keith.
