(KPRC)

HOUSTON – Hurricane season may not start for about another month and a half, but the year’s first subtropical depression already formed Wednesday in the Atlantic Ocean.

The system was located about 800 miles west-southwest of the Azores, a group of nine Portuguese islands in the North Atlantic. It had winds of 35 mph and was moving north-northeast at 8 mph.

Forecasters said the depression will remain weak and be absorbed Thursday by a larger low pressure system.

The storm poses no threat to land.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

Forecasters have said a near-average season is expected.

The first named storm of the year in the Atlantic will be Arlene.
