Tropical Storm Don forms in Atlantic Ocean

HOUSTON – Tropical Storm Don has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, just east of the Leeward Islands.

As of Monday afternoon, Don is located about 485 miles east-southeast of Barbados and 595 miles east of Trinidad, with wind speeds of 40 mph and heading west at 17 mph.

Don is forecasted to continue to move west, just off the coast of South America. It will not strengthen much, if any, as it moves into the Caribbean Tuesday night.

When Don reaches the Caribbean it will encounter high wind shear, which will not only prevent it from reaching hurricane status, but will likely cause it to dissipate. This will happen Wednesday or Thursday.

The remnant low will continue west toward Nicaragua. Don will not impact the U.S. coast or Mexico.
