Tropical depression forms in Florida Straits

System expected to strengthen into tropical storm

HOUSTON – A tropical system just south of Florida that forecasters have been watching for nearly a week strengthened into a tropical depression Sunday afternoon.

As of 4 p.m., Tropical Depression 9 had winds of 35 mph and was located in the Florida Straits, about 60 miles south of Key West. The storm was moving west at 9 mph.

According to forecasters, the depression will strengthen into a named tropical storm by Monday afternoon.

Forecasters said the storm will turn north by early Tuesday, and remain a tropical storm as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Landfall is expected in the Great Bend region of Florida late Thursday or early Friday.
