Son stabs mother to death while she's on phone, deputies say

HOUSTON – A man stabbed his mother to death Friday morning and then tried to hide in a nearby home in west Harris County, deputies said.

The incident was reported about 3:15 a.m. in the 13000 block of Garden Grove Court.

According to Harris County deputies, a woman was talking to her mother on the phone when the woman’s son started to stab her. The woman's son ran down the street after the stabbing and broke into another home, where he tried to hide from deputies, authorities said.

"The daughter called her, told her the grandson was acting strangely, and then started screaming that he was stabbing her," said Ben Beall, of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the victim died at the scene.

The family’s minister, Gregg Patrick, identified the victim as Dedre Jefferson.

According to the Patrick, Jefferson had called her mother and said that her son was acting strange. He said Jefferson's son was hallucinating.

Patrick identified the son as a Blake Jefferson, a 22-year-old student at Texas Southern University.

"There's no question that this fine young man had a problem and something initiated that problem, (and) that he snapped," Patrick said. "That's the only thing that could have happened."

The trim and sheetrock around the front door of Edward Kotack's home were splintered and broken after Kotack said Blake Jefferson broke into his home. Kotack said his daughter kept Jefferson from going farther into their home.

"He was going to go up stairs. She screamed at him, but he came downstairs and then he hid in the closet over there," Kotack said.

Dedre Jefferson was an Alief Independent School District board member, the minister said.

The district released the following statement:

"The Alief ISD family extends its deepest condolences to Dedre Jefferson's family. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dedre, who was a valued Alief family member and community member. Dedre was a proud Alief ISD graduate, former employee and current board member. She will be greatly missed."

The son was arrested and charged with murder.
