HOUSTON – Getting a child ready for school this year will cost about $85 more than it did last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

We started with one of the biggest expenses: clothes. No matter where a child goes to school, there's a good chance parents will be shopping for uniforms.
Just about every retailer carries the standard white polo and khaki pants. But who wants to run all over town to find the best price? You don't have to because we did. We checked Walmart, Target, JC Penney, Old Navy and Fallas Paredes
Fallas Paredes had the lowest priced Bots white polo shirts at $3.99. Fallas' boys khaki pants start at $5.99.
When we checked, Walmart, Target and Old Navy had boys' polo shirts for $5. Khaki pants were $10 at Old Navy, $12.97 at Walmart and $14.99 at Target.
Parents want their child to get a trim before the bell rings, and that can be done for free at any JC Penney salon this month. You do need a reservation. The special is for kindergartners through sixth-graders.
Legacy Community Health Services is offering free immunizations and backpacks filled with supplies for any student who needs them. Just bring your child's shot record to one of two events. One is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Legacy Lyons Avenue Clinic, 4602 Lyons Ave. The other event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Legacy Montrose Clinic, 1415 California St.
