Houston police said officers were called to the house of the 13-month-old's grandmother as paramedics were taking the girl to the hospital.

According to police, the grandmother said the girl had been staying with her mother, 23-year-old Ginyear Jones, and Jones' boyfriend, 23-year-old John Caldwell, at the Best Reed Motel, located in the 4700 block Reed Road in southeast Houston.

The grandmother went to visit her granddaughter Sunday night, and after realizing she had sustained serious injuries, took the girl home and called 911.

Doctors said the girl suffered broken bones, lacerations, bite marks and bruises.

Police said they went to the hotel and took Jones and Caldwell into custody.

During a Tuesday court hearing, officials said the girl died on Monday.

Jones and her boyfriend, John Caldwell, are both charged with injury to a child-serious bodily injury. Jones faces two counts.

Jones has a bond of $20,000. Caldwell was being held without bond.

Prosecutors said they may decide to upgrade charges to capital murder, but they have not yet done so.
