Suspected shoplifter leads police on 2-county, high-speed chase

Chase started at Baytown Walmart

BAYTOWN – Authorities from four different law enforcement agencies were part of a wild chase that started at a Walmart in Baytown.

It was just after 8:10 p.m. Sunday, when a loss prevention officer at the store on Garth Road tried to stop a woman, later identified as 37-year-old Michelle Fiala, after she was seen concealing merchandise in the greeting card section.

Deputies said Fiala struggled with that Walmart officer, but was able to get away.

Officials said Fiala ran to the parking lot, got into her minivan and drove off.

Deputies said Fiala lead police through two counties, from Baytown, into Houston and then north to Humble.

During the chase, police said Fiala reached speeds of up to 100 miles an hour.

Officers and deputies tried to use stop sticks to slower her down, but she was able to swerve around them.

According to authorities, Fiala eventually crashed off Knox Road near Northpark Road in Montgomery County. After she crashed, she got out of the van and started running.

Deputies managed to capture Fiala in some nearby woods.

Fiala was transported back to Baytown where she was booked into the jail. She's charged with robbery and evading arrest.

Her name was not immediately released.
