HOUSTON – A downtown hot spot gets hit by health inspectors again. And salad, soup and health food were all deemed hazardous. KPRC Local 2 Consumer Expert Amy Davis has the details in this week's Restaurant Report Card.
Diners rave about the Cajun food at RKG New Orleans Cajun Poboy. On website Foursquare one person wrote "The crawfish po-boy and the boudin balls are outstanding!!!"
Employees, though, are staying moot about health inspectors findings here.
"We have to talk to you guys about the roach problem," Davis told the only employee behind the counter when she stopped by the restaurant at 648 Polk Street.
"Ok. The manager's not here," said the woman. "Thank you."
That employee escaped behind the kitchen door, but a roach left behind on a wall was evidence there may still be a problem. When inspectors stopped by, they say they saw "small and large roaches crawling on food, on counters and the food preparation table," and another roach inside a bag of cabbage and potatoes.
In May 2012, inspectors took pictures of rodent droppings all over the restaurant, but the manager seemed confused about what inspectors meant by "droppings."
"You admit that you guys did have rodent feces that needed to be cleaned up?" Davis asked the manager back in 2012.
"No, roach droppings, not feces. Droppings," he replied.
At the Hollister Grill at 1741 Hollister inspectors said there were rodent droppings in the produce bin on top of cut cabbage and onions. Inspectors say employees at Sonic at 1208 Federal Road need to do more to minimize the presence of cockroaches.
Same story at Fuzion at 300 Milam downtown, where they also said the food was not safe for human consumption because a cooler was not keeping food cold enough.
Here's something you don't hear every day: the food on the salad bar was "not safe for human consumption" at the Souper Salad at 4884 Beechnut. Just a few doors down at New York Pizzeria, the pasta and soup were off temperature.
