Police: Burglary suspect shot after trying to run down officers

HOUSTON – Police shot a burglary suspect in north Houston after officers said he attempted to run them down on Saturday.

Houston police responded to reports of a burglary in progress at a business on West Greens Road and Northborough Drive around 11:15 p.m.  When officers arrived at the scene, they caught a man in the process of burglarizing the business, investigators said.

The man then jumped into a stolen white van and tried to run over the officers in the parking lot, police said.  One of the officers pulled his weapon and fired at the van.

Detectives said that after trying to run down the officers, the suspect put the car in drive, sped through the metal fence surrounding the business, barreled across the street and crashed into a concrete wall in front of another business.  The officers followed him across the street on foot and the man tried to back over them again, investigators said.

Police said two other officers arrived at the scene, pulled their weapons and also started firing at the van.  The driver reversed and slammed into a wooden electrical pole, which caused several transformers to blow, officials said. The van finally stopped.

Police said the suspect had been shot in the leg.  He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

One officer was bumped by the van during the pursuit and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

HPD said they believe the suspect may be responsible for several burglaries.
