Poisoned doctor's recordings played at ex-lover's trial

HOUSTON – The girlfriend of a doctor who says he was poisoned by his ex-lover took the stand to talk about her relationship with the victim.

Dr. Ana Gonzalez-Angulo is accused of poisoning her former lover, Dr. George Blumenschein, with a chemical used in antifreeze. On Monday, Blumenschein's girlfriend, Dr. Evette Toney, testified that she thought the relationship between her boyfriend and Gonzalez-Angulo was strictly professional.

"I thought they were both actually working,"  Toney said. "He never told me that they were traveling as much together. He would mention that she's at this meeting. But not that they were traveling together."

Jurors also heard a recording that Blumenschein made of Gonzalez-Angulo about five months after he was poisoned. He asked Gonzalez-Angulo about why she had him followed.

Blumenschein said it was for his protection. On the recording, Gonzalez-Angulo claimed Toney could have been to blame for a physical attack on Gonzalez-Angulo.

Prosecutors said Gonzalez-Angulo poisoned Blumenschein after finding out that he and Toney were trying to have a baby.

"You lie. If you wouldn't lie, things would be a lot easier. You lie a lot, George," said Gonzalez, during one of 14 conversations that Blumenschein secretly recorded.

He said he never directly asked her if she poisoned him.

"I had already asked her that question. But no, I did not ask again while we were recording her," Blumenschein said.

Court will resume at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday with Toney back on the stand.

Gonzalez-Angulo faces up to life in prison if she's convicted.
