Needy children get brand new playground thanks to Houston company

HOUSTON – The changing weather couldn't keep 200 volunteers in La Porte from building children a new place to play. The Boys and Girls Harbor is getting a new playground thanks to a local company Making a Difference.

Just in time for the holidays, the Boys and Girls Harbor has received quite a gift from Houston-based company, Quantum Resources Management. For Quantum Resources volunteer Alan Smith, this is a wonderful day.

"There are kids in this city don't have the ability to be kids, to come out and play," Smith said.

The gift is a brand new playground worth $90,000. It is being built with 150 Quantum volunteers in conjunction with KaBoom!, a national non-profit group dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most.

The playground design is based on a drawing the kids who will be playing on it created in October.

The Boys and Girls Harbor is a home for children in need. On their campus is the Harbor Academy, where the playground is being built. It's a charter school where about 100 students attend. The current playground is about 20 years old. The children couldn't be happier about the new playground.

Gladney Darroh, Chairman of the Boys and Girls Harbor, said "The kids can't wait for us to finish so they can come out and use it."

This is not the first time that Quantum Resources Management has done this; they have built two other playgrounds with KaBoom! here in Houston.
