HPD: Handcuffed man on the run in west Houston neighborhood

Police no longer actively searching for him

HOUSTON – Police say a handcuffed man got away from a Department of Public Safety trooper in west Houston late Wednesday night.

The trooper pulled the man over for a suspected traffic violation near the Gessner Road exit on the Katy Freeway just after 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The trooper had put the man in handcuffs and was in the process of arresting him when he ran off.

The officer chased the man who jumped over a freeway barrier and onto the feeder road near the Memorial City Mall.

He ran into the mall area and then into a neighborhood adjacent to the mall.

Houston police were called in to help with the search.

Despite more than an hour of searching with a K-9 unit and a helicopter, the escapee was not found.

The escapee's car was impounded.

Authorities eventually called off the search because the man was not considered a threat to the community.

Police said anyone who spots the handcuffed escapee should call them.
