HOUSTON – Some Houston students received a lesson on Tuesday about the fight over gun control and keeping their schools safe.
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) sponsored a discussion with students of the Konia Community Learning Academy Center.
"We collectively fail our children when we cannot provide a safe environment," said Jackson Lee.
Lee didn't do all the talking. The lawmaker received an earful from students.
"We should put security guards in our schools so people won't just come and shoot our children," said fifth grader Jasmine Jones.
The Houston democrat spoke one day after President Obama returned to Connecticut to promote his proposed gun legislation.
Surrounded by parents of children and families of teachers killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the president urged Congress to vote up or down on the proposals.
However, at least fourteen members of the U.S. Senate are vowing to block a vote.
The NRA and other groups also say that the proposed measures, which would require universal background checks and ban assault style weapons, would violate the a person's 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee planned to return to Washington, D.C. after visiting with students. She said she planned to take the insight she gained from the students to help address gun violence.
