HFD: Lightning sparks fire at chemical plant

HOUSTON – Firefighters blamed lightning for starting a fire at a chemical plant in east Houston on Wednesday.

Around 2 a.m., the Houston Fire Department responded to a storage tank fire.  When they arrived at the scene on Wallisville Road and Port Street, they found a small fire inside a storage tank at a chemical plant.

According to firefighters, lightning struck the tank around 12:30 a.m., sparking the blaze.

Firefighters said the tank contained mineral oil, which is an additive, non-flammable product used to make engine oil. 

Firefighters quickly put out the flames; no chemical was released.

No one was injured in the fire.
