Fire destroys NE Houston home

HOUSTON – A trip to the store may have saved the lives of some northeast Houston homeowners after a fire destroyed their home.

A fire broke out at a home on the corner of Verdun Drive and Glen Falls Street just after midnight Saturday.

The Sheldon Fire Department said they arrived to find the one-story duplex engulfed in flames.

"We were able to hold the damage to the main part of one unoccupied portion of the structure, but the other portion of the structure did get heavy water and smoke damage as well," said Captain Roland Balderas.

The residents were shopping during the time of the fire, officials said. They arrived to a home in ruins.

"They won't be able to stay here tonight, but they will be able to salvage items from their residence," Balderas said.

Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
