Copper thieves target west Houston construction site

Exclusive surveillance shows them pilfering copper and aluminum

HOUSTON – One man was arrested and another managed to escape after police moved in on a couple of metal thieves in West Houston Thursday morning.

Exclusive surveillance video obtained by Local 2 shows the two men walking into the construction site on Briar Forest and The West Sam Houston Tollway around 2:30 a.m.

In the video, they are seen stealing copper and aluminum.  An off-site surveillance company saw what was going on and called police.

When officers arrived, the two men ran. A police helicopter and K-9 unit were called in to assist with the search.

About 45 minutes later, the men were spotted running through a parking garage.  Police said they were trying to get to their getaway vehicle.

The K-9 officer caught one of the men.  He was arrested and treated for dog bites.

His accomplice, who may be his brother, got away.

After hours of searching, police called off their active search.

The man who was arrested was charged with felony evading, criminal trespass, and giving a false name to officers.

Investigators believe the two men also robbed the construction site over the weekend, but managed to get away.
