HOUSTON – From downtown to all of the venues hosting celebrity-heavy bashes, Houston could very well be one of the safest places in the world this weekend.
At least that's what law enforcement is striving for.
Back in 2006, The Galleria was hit with crowds and traffic jams during All-Star weekend.
Although law enforcement agencies never give out specifics about safety strategies, their coverage has been carefully planned right down to the last detail.
"What you'll see on our part is a lot of police presence. We have a lot of plans in place to make sure the city has a safe event," HPD Asst. Chief Mark Eisenman said.
The Houston Police Department isn't tackling security alone.
The department is working with other local, state and even federal law enforcement agencies throughout the weekend.
Police won't say how many officers they have, but they did say law enforcement would work extended hours this weekend.
Police will be handling security for event-sanctioned parties only and high profile tourist traps like The Galleria, which anticipates a rush of shoppers.
While you can expect to see police officers in uniform, others will be plain clothes.
Back in 2006, the last time Houston hosted the NBA All-Star Game, police had to close down some parking entrances to The Galleria and the west loop because of traffic.
"Come and have fun, good weather, good safe event. Just pay attention to your surroundings," Eisenman said.
HPD says motorists should expect traffic delays, particularly in The Galleria area.
