Rising Brazos River forces residents from homes

ROSENBERG, Texas – Many residents evacuated their homes Monday and Tuesday morning as water from the Brazos River continued to creep onto residential streets.

Alice Gracia evacuated her home over the weekend and returned Tuesday morning to find it submerged in water. “It went up so quick. I didn’t realize it was going to do that,” Gracia said.

She has been living in Rosenberg for more than 30 years and said she has never seen flooding like this.

“It’s really sad because my dad gave me this piece of property before he passed away and that’s why I hold on to it,” Gracia said. “It’s very sentimental to me.”

Before evacuating she managed to grab some clothes and important documents, but she fears the rest of her belongings are destroyed.

Meanwhile high water on 7th Street near Avenue D made it difficult for residents to get to and from their homes Tuesday morning.

“My dad is still over there and I just want to check on him,” Lupe Mendoza said.

However, he didn’t have a chance Tuesday morning because he didn’t want to risk driving through the water.

Other residents made their way out of the neighborhood by wading across the water.  One man even carried his dog in his arms, trying to get to safety.

Several emergency agencies have now set up a command post at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. There are FEMA rescue boats and army like tankers ready to go in case residents need to be rescued.

The Brazos River is expected to crest at some point Tuesday night at a record level of 53-and-a-half feet.
