Rash of car burglaries has Sunnyside area apartment residents on edge

Dozens of car break-ins have been reported in apartment parking lots

HOUSTON – The sound of window repairmen is now a familiar one for residents at the Cypress Creek apartments after criminals have repeatedly targeted and terrorized the complex.

"Windows broken out, consoles broken into just a numerous amount of everything," Evelyn Walker, who had her car broken into, said.

Keshia Pickering, who also had her car broken into several times, said, "I've been here two years and never seen anything like this. It's crazy."

Pickering had her car broken into five times in the recent weeks and also had her wallet stolen.

And she's not alone.

"We have people who aren't able to make it to work, people's kids who can't get into vehicles because there's shattered glass and there's blood left in these vehicles," Devin Pollard, a worried neighbor, mentioned.

Neighbors say more than 30 vehicles were broken into over overnight.

However, they also say dozens of other cars were also hit at the complex at least four times this month and at surrounding complexes too.

"We work hard for our money. We get up for work and come to our truck and it's broken into. It's ridiculous," Walker said.

There are surveillance cameras set up across the property, but so far, there are no leads.

Apartment managers say they sent out a notice about the crimes and are working to speak with residents.

They're also working to hire security, including off-duty Houston Police Department officers to patrol the complex.

"I have no idea why they keep doing this. Go get a job. Find something to do," Pickering said.
