HOUSTON – A rare find has been unearthed along a section of the Grand Parkway that's now under construction.
An archeologist with the Texas Department of Transportation discovered human remains about two feet below the ground surface.
The remains could be 3,000 to 5,000 years old, officials said.
"They were essentially hunters and gatherers, so they would move through an area," Dr. David Temple said. "They might stay in an area long enough to take advantage of a food resource, live there for a while and then move to another spot."
Three leg bones, a jaw and teeth are among the remains thought to be early Native American. Archaeologists are searching the area for more remains.
TxDOT is waiting on a court order to have the remains, which were found near a stream, exhumed.
TxDOT is not disclosing the location of the find. Officials are worried about vandalism, so they're keeping it a secret.
Construction in that area began in September 2011 and should be finished by December 2013.
