Police: Wrong-way driver crashes, dies

HOUSTON – A man driving the wrong direction on the freeway died after, police said, he lost control of his car and crashed.

The accident happened around 1 a..m. Tuesday on South Post Oak near West Bellfort in southwest Houston.

Investigators said the driver was speeding southbound in the northbound lanes when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a metal pole. The car then burst into flames, officials said.

Investigators said two tow-truck drivers showed up and tried unsuccessful to get the driver out of the vehicle. Police said the driver died inside the vehicle.

Officials said the driver may have been intoxicated. The driver's name hasn't been released.
