Nursing homes evacuated, residents removed from danger

HOUSTON – It was a terrifying day for dozens of seniors trapped at two assisted living facilities only a few blocks apart.

Sky 2 was over the scene as the water inched closer and closer to the Atria Cypresswood and Autumn Leaves senior centers.

With no way in or out by normal means, military-style vehicles and boats were brought in with first responders to rescue more than 50 seniors.

Dora Gray, a senior who was rescued, explained, "It was a little bumpy, little. But it wasn't too bad."

Elizabeth Samuel's dad Paul had to be rescued along with several other people.

At least seven people have died in connection with Monday's floods, officials said.

And the family couldn't be more appreciative.

The 85-year-old is diabetic and has heart problems.

"He was suppose to have (an) echogram done this morning but we couldn't get him over there. But he looks good," Elizabeeth Samuel said.

After finally being rescued, the seniors were taken to a staging area to be checked out at the Champion Forest Baptist Church parking lot.

Following an anything but normal Tuesday afternoon, the seniors are just thankful to finally be safe.

"Never in my life. I never expected. I was watching all the water on the streets and never had seen that before," said Nina Pena, a senior who had to be rescued.
