New York giraffe gives birth at Animal Adventure Park

HARPUSVILLE, N.Y. – A giraffe at an Upstate New York zoo gave birth Saturday as thousands of people on the internet watched.

Animal Adventure Park in Harpusville, New York, has been streaming a live camera inside the pen of April, a 15-year-old giraffe who gave birth to her fourth calf.

According to the YouTube page where the camera is hosted, her mate, 5-year-old Oliver, is being kept in a pen next to her. This is his first calf.

Handlers give April occasional treats, like romaine lettuce, but Oliver won’t be indulging.

“He is a bull,” a statement on the YouTube page said. “A bull is a bull is a bull. Bulls only really care about two things – fighting and the unmentionable.”

Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months.

According to the YouTube page, the calf is expected to weigh 150 pounds and be 6 feet tall at birth.

April will raise the calf. Weaning begins when the calf is between six and 10 months old.
