Members of FDNY, NYPD get into bloody fight at charity game

A charity football game between members of the New York Fire Department and New York Police Department turned into a blood brawl in Coney Island Saturday.

Members of the FDNY and NYPD met at MCU Park for the Fun City Bowl. Proceeds go to help families in both departments.

An argument escalated on the field, and that's when fists started flying.

"I think one of the FDNY guys exchanged words with the NYPD player and then from there, I couldn't see what was happening, I just saw the crowds come around the player," freelance photographer Angel Zayas told NBC 4 New York. "I heard it happening before I saw it happening."

A second fight broke out, and players on the sidelines ran to the center of the field while families watched from the stands.

Eventually, the fighting stopped. Firefighters and officers exchanged handshakes and hugs.

"Football is a competitive sport, whether it is the NFL Super Bowl or the annual NYPD-FDNY challenge. It is part of the spirit of the sport, but it all ends on the field," the NYPD said in a statement.
