Mayor Parker to speak at Memorial Day event

Thousands prepare for Monday's ceremony

HOUSTON – Monday will bring a somber day of remembrance as Memorial Day ceremonies take place all over the country.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker is scheduled to speak at a ceremony taking place at the city's National Cemetery.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

The National Cemetery spreads over 419 acres and has over 70,000 veterans buried there.

On Sunday, an estimated 25,000 volunteers placed rows of flags across the cemetery grounds.

They also read veteran's names aloud and said prayers for the United Sates as well as for those in uniform.

On Monday, veterans. their families, and communities from the surrounding areas will gather at the cemetery to pay tribute to soldiers and their sacrifices.

During the ceremony  there will be a parade of colors, several cannon salutes, and performances.
