Houston rapper Z-Ro charged with aggravated assault of ex-girlfriend, court records say

Joseph McVey appears in court Thursday

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Local rapper Z-Ro was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after authorities said he beat his ex-girlfriend in April.

According to court documents, Z-Ro, Joseph Wayne McVey, 40, was supposed to meet his ex-girlfriend at a restaurant near the Galleria, but the restaurant was closed.

McVey told her to come to his home so they could talk, according to court records.

When the woman arrived at his home, she said McVey started to slap and punch her. He dragged her through the house while holding a pistol, according to court documents.

The woman said the assault lasted for about an hour and a half.

She said she went to the bathroom with her backpack, which had her phone inside, and turned on the recorder. She went back to the room where McVey was and he continued to abuse her, according to court documents.

The nearly 21-minute recording was heard by authorities and charges were filed.

McVey appeared in court Thursday morning and a judge reminded him he cannot have contact with his ex-girlfriend, according to the bond conditions.

During the hearing, McVey's attorney said the victim has initiated contact with his client since the alleged incident and they even did a radio show together.

After the hearing, McVey's attorney called the allegations "baseless." He said Z-Ro is a personal friend of his and he's shocked by the allegations.

McVey didn't make a comment.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner issued the following statement:'

“I cannot speak to recent allegations, but the reason the City of Houston recognized Z-Ro in January is because of the work he has done in the community. He has been a part of various back to school fairs, created an annual basketball tournament with our teens and participated in Constable Rosen’s Teen Summit. We all make mistakes, but, at this point, he has the right to due process, and I am hopeful that regardless of the outcome he will grow from this experience.”
