GALVESTON, Texas - A Galveston police officer was working security at a Kroger store along the Seawall Boulevard yesterday around 3:56 p.m.
Police said employees saw Sherman Johnson shoplifting from the store. He was confronted by the officer and taken to an upstairs business office.
Investigators said at first, Johnson was cooperative but then suddenly stood up, and shoved the officer into a wall.
Johnson tried to run past the officer but was grabbed and that's when he pushed the officer down a fight of stairs and took off running.
Kroger Managers Tom Herring and Darrell Argo chased Johnson after grabbing a pair of the officer's handcuffs.
Johnson ran to the Best Western motel next door where Herring and Argo caught up to him on a second floor breezeway.
Johnson continued to struggle and attempt to escape as they tried to handcuff him, biting each of them before he could be subdued.
Patrol officers arrived to take custody of Johnson who was finally detained by Herring and Argo.
The Galveston County District Attorney's Office supported two counts of Robbery and one count of Assault on a Public Servant and recommended a total bond $105,000 for Johnson.
The officer was transported by Galveston EMS to UTMB for an injury to his leg.
The severity of the injury and his return to work are unknown at this time. Kroger Managers Herring and Argo were treated by EMS at the scene.
The Galveston Police Department would like to thank Tom Herring and Darrell Argo for their assistance in capturing this violent individual.
