Investigators said five children were inside the apartment, along with their father, when the fire started. All managed to get out safely, officials said.

Neighbors said they think the children may have started the fire.

"The father said that the kids were playing with fire inside of the closet, and that sounds like just what happened." said Michael Fountain, who lives nearby. "I'm hoping that family will find somewhere to go and find shelter, because it's hard out here."

Fannie Crowder said she thought the thick, white smoke outside her window was fog.

"Then I said, 'Oh my God, that's smoke' and you could just see the blazes." said Crowder.  "So when I came out in the hall, it was getting worse and worse. Everybody was running and they were knocking on doors telling everybody to get out."

Fire officials said they were able to knock the flames out pretty quickly. The fire left smoke damage on the second and third floors.

No one was injured during the fire.

Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
