HOUSTON – The Houston Human Society unveiled a brick memorial Saturday to honor the four Houston firefighters who were killed in a motel fire in southwest Houston.
It was an honor that had special meaning for the family of fallen firefighter Robert Bebee, who made it his mission to help stray and mistreated animals everywhere.
The firefighters' names were etched in stone for all visitors to see.
Since the blaze, many memorials have honored Anne Sullivan, Robert Garner, Matthew Renaud and Bebee. This one held a unique place in some hearts.
"I wouldn't miss this one," said Sabina Bebee, Robert's mother. "Robert was a lover of animals, especially dogs and cats, and he frequented this place quite a bit."
Sabina said her son had a passion for rescuing people and animals.
"At one point, he had eight dogs and four cats," said Sabina.
Losing Robert has been heartbreaking, but Sabina said she slowly moves forward, finding comfort in knowing her son sees this special display.
"The good Lord helps us take one step at a time and pray," said Sabina. "I'm glad I'm here because Robert's dancing a jig up there for us. He is thrilled."
David Renaud also proudly stands next to the memorial stones, imaging just what this means to his brave brother, firefighter Matthew Renaud.
"He's grinning from ear to ear right now," said David. "He would be honored and proud to have his name down here with the Humane Society."
